I want to replace my existing door. What measurements do I need to take to ensure that I order a door that will best fit my opening?
There are two ways to replace your entry door. You can replace just the door panel, or slab, or the entire pre-hung (including door frame) unit.?For the slab only, measure the height and width on the door you are replacing ? do not measure sweep (weather seal) on the bottom of the door. If you wish to have the door prepped for hinges, lockset and deadbolt you will need to supply us with the following information:
- Distance from the top of the door to the top of the first hinge,
- Distance from the top of the door to the top of the second hinge,
- Distance from the top of the door to the top of the third hinge,
- Distance from the top of the door to the top of the fourth hinge (for 96? doors),
- The size of hinge you are using (width and height with hinge open),
- Distance from the top of the door to the center of the deadbolt,
- Distance from the top of the door to the center of the lockset,
- Distance from the edge of the door to the center of the deadbolt and from the edge of the door to the center of the lockset. They should be the same.
For the entire pre-hung unit, measure the height and width of your entire door opening, stud to stud, floor to header ? called the rough opening. To measure accurately, you might have to remove some interior casing (moulding) to see the backside of the door frame. Typically, no more than a one inch of extra space is desired between the actual (outside to outside) door unit dimension and the rough opening, length and width. Shimming, blocking or additional framing may be required in the opening to accommodate the new door unit.
Please feel free to call our customer service representatives at 636-225-7717 should you have questions!
Can I get my door pre-hung?
A pre-hung door simply means that the door is already mounted onto the frame, which saves you all the work of mortising the frame and the door to receive the hinges. The door and the frame are also predrilled and mortised to receive the knob and strike, and exterior pre-hung doors also have the weatherstripping and sill attached. Yes, we can pre-hang your door.
Can I use a storm door in front of my entry door?
Storm doors that are vented can be used on fiberglass and steel entry doors, but should NOT be used in conjunction with doors painted or stained with dark colors or in areas of high heat or intense sun exposure. ?A vented storm door allows the trapped heat to escape, prolonging the life and performance of your door. Improper storm door applications can void the warranty on your entry door.?Note: Storm doors may not be used on Masonite wood doors and will void the warranty.
Do you offer prefinished fiberglass doors?
Yes, we offer prefinished (paint and stain) fiberglass doors.
Do your doors meet Energy Star? qualifications?
Yes, many of our fiberglass and steel entry doors are assembled into entry units by an approved Energy Star partner. The assembled unit can be considered Energy Star compliant.
What is Low-E glass?
Low-E glass has a special coating that blocks some heat transfer for better energy performance.
What is glass U-Factor?
Glass U-Factor is the measure of heat loss through the door system. The lower the U-Factor, the better the insulator.
What species is most durable/weather resistant?
Wood in general is a great insulator and can withstand just about anything Mother Nature sends its way as long as it has protection. Protection in the form of a great finish and a?building overhang. For tough exposures, there are a variety of products that can withstand more than your typical door. Doors made of?Douglas fir, Sapele Mahogany and Nootka Cypress are known to be tough-weather-resistant.
How do I find out if you offer and interior version of a specific exterior door?
We can make doors in any design, size and wood species. Therefore, we can make any interior door to match an exterior door. And truly, any exterior door can be used in an interior application.
Can I rush-order a door?
If the desired door is not in stock, we will place an order for the door. Upon receipt of an order, most doors have a 3-week lead-time (some custom doors can take longer). Add transit time and any prep work needed to arrive at the total turnaround time for the door.

What?s the best kind of window frame to buy?
In choosing a material for your window frames and sashes you should look for the best combination of strength, durability, insulating properties, ease of maintenance, and attractiveness. Vinyl is today?s dominant choice for updating old wood and aluminum windows. The easy to install pocket replacement window made popular by vinyl is now available in reliable AuraLast Wood. Wood and clad-wood double hung pocket windows are designed for installation into existing wood frames.
Can replacing my old windows really save me money on heating and cooling costs?
Yes! Up to one-third of the money you spend to heat and cool your home can be lost as the energy (warm air in winter, cooled air in summer) ?escapes? through inefficient windows. Older style frames and non-insulated glass allow thermal energy to pass easily between the outside of your home and the inside. But today?s replacement windows feature insulated frames and glass packages that create a thermal barrier to prevent energy loss. This means you?ll use less energy to heat and cool your home and see lower energy bills.
Do I have to replace all of my windows at the same time?
To realize the maximum energy savings it is recommended that you replace all of your old windows. But you don?t have to do it all at once. Even replacing a few windows at a time will help to reduce energy use and lower your heating and cooling bills. We can help create a replacement schedule that will gradually put you on the road to replacing all of your windows in a reasonable time period.
My local hardware store sells replacement windows. Aren?t they all the same?
No. ?Off-the-shelf? windows from your local big box store are generally of a lower quality to satisfy those who are looking for the cheapest window, without regard to window performance. Plus, you may need to modify your home to fit the available sizes, an extensive remodeling process that takes time and money.
Do I have to replace all of my windows with the exact same style of window?
Not necessarily. Although some window styles are more appropriate for the particular architectural style of the home, we have been able to create a dramatic look for many customers by combining styles and shapes of windows. We can sit down with you to go over all of your options, including colors, finishes, and window hardware.
